Low metallicity and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel galaxy

چکیده
Low-metallicity (Z < ∼ 0.05Z⊙) massive ( > ∼ 40M⊙) stars might end their life by directly collapsing into massive black holes (BHs, 30 < ∼ mBH/M⊙ < ∼ 80). More than ∼ 10 massive BHs might have been generated via this mechanism in the metal-poor ring galaxy Cartwheel, during the last ∼ 10 yr. We show that such BHs might power most of the ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) observed in the Cartwheel. We also consider a sample of ULX-rich galaxies and we find a possible anti-correlation between the number of ULXs per galaxy and the metallicity in these galaxies. However, the data are not sufficient to draw any robust conclusions about this anti-correlation, and further studies are required.

A thorough study of the intriguing X - ray emission from the Cartwheel ring
the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results from the high resolution Chandra observation of the Cartwheel galaxy. Many individual sources are resolved in the image, mostly associated with the outer ring. All detected sources have a very high X-ray luminosity (≥ 10 39 erg s −1) that classifies them as Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX). The bright...
متن کاملVariability of ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel Ring
The Cartwheel is one of the most outstanding examples of a dynamically perturbed galaxy where star formation is occurring inside the ring–like structure. In previous studies with Chandra, we detected 16 Ultra Luminous X-ray sources lying along the southern portion of the ring. Their Luminosity Function is consistent with them being in the high luminosity tail of the High Mass X-ray Binaries dis...
متن کاملNonnuclear Hyper/Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources in the Starbursting Cartwheel Ring Galaxy
We report the Chandra/ACIS-S detection of more than 20 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L0.5−10keV > ∼3 × 10 ergs s) in the Cartwheel collisional ring galaxy system, of which over a dozen are located in the outer active star-forming ring. A remarkable hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX, L0.5−10keV > ∼10 ergs s assuming isotropic radiation), which dominates the X-ray emission from the Cartwheel r...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Ultra Luminous X - ray sources in the High Velocity System of NGC 1275
We report the results of a study of X-ray point sources coincident with the High Velocity System (HVS) projected in front of NGC 1275. A very deep X-ray image of the core of the Perseus cluster made with the Chandra Observatory has been used. We find a population of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULX; 7 sources with L X (0.5 − 7.0 keV) > 7 × 10 39 erg s −1). As with the ULX populations in the An...
